CHAPTER 10
"Fast Cars and Rock & Roll"

Well, our worst fears came to pass and there was nothing at all we could do about it. Crikey pressed the magic red button and the car burst into life. The poor fellow is so large that his huge foot probably squashed the accelerator pedal flat to the floor. The engine certainly sounded like it. On top of that he had absolutely no idea of how to drive, and seemed to only have one hand on the steering wheel. Nobody knew what would happen.

Ratcop, who was in the GollyGum Police Station at the time, heard the sound of an engine revving in the distance and jumped into the Cop Car to give chase. This was probably not a very wise decision but it certainly added to the excitement of the spectacle.

On top of this, the poor possums had to listen to a very saucy piece of improvised Rock and Roll singing, as the deranged Crikey sped back and forth across the country. This would have added insult to injury, because their ears would only be used to a much more refined sort of music.

Apparently someone gave the possums a lift back to town, otherwise they might have been stuck up at the lookout all night.

A bird watcher who had been peacefully filming the Bubsy Birds flying backwards, swung her video camera around and caught much of the action of the chase. You might as well see the sorry sight for yourself, but you would be well advised to block your ears so you can't hear the screech of tyres or the cheeky singing.
